Portable Hard drive – Maxtor 2.5″ M3 1TB External

Is your back up disk more than a year old? Is it reaching 3 years old? If you are a high user best to move your valuable data on to a newer disk and use the older disk for less valuable data or current working backup.

Also if you are a user with no back up except what is on your device. Time to get a back up disk.

You only rely on free cloud back up service. For the most important data make sure you have an offline back up in your hands with the use of at least a external Harddisk (HDD) if nor a NAS (network access storage. email us for more info on NAS options)

Today the loss of your data could be devastating even for the home user. Even if it is just memories, they could be important. We are human.

Notebooks, Laptops and portable devices September – October 2015

Our choices of devices are many, in terms of size, clarity, speed, features, suitability to purpose and more. Over the many years we had been in employment as well as on our own we have been fortunate to try many brands and terminals (as they are collectively known) in their many stages of development and popularity. Our choices had been in most times been windows devices for large devices and found android to be more adaptable to our needs. This does not mean that the Windows and Apple along with other branded devices do not hold their appeal.

So as much as the years since our opening we had adopted as Asus as our primary choice big portables (laptops). HTC, Acer, Huawei, Hyundai, LG, Lenovo, Samsung Iphone and many more brands based on either windows or Android had been suitable including IOS for our smaller lighter go to devices.

Desktops have always been the favoured custom builts. Mostly on our high end custom build desktops we based them on a cooler master chasis with a few favorites on power supplies, gigabytes or asus motherboards, intel or amd processors, many brands, specifications of memory, harddisks and other peripherals.

Over these last few weeks we decided to change our long serving Asus Laptops from 2008 and add on another device for OS (Operating System) diversity support. So what did we get?

Our First Renewal, we continued with an Asus for one change over we went with an ASUS K501-DM006H. Its a generation I5 which happens to have quad core processor rather than the option of I7 Generation 5 which happen to have a dual core processor in the A555LJ-Multi Colour Option. The hard disk offered on both happened to be 1TB standard hard disk (Non SSD), video cards we decent Nvdia cards not the highest that is available to be offered but not the lowest, 4GB ram, battery difference was one cell between both the models (4 cell and 3 cell) the K501 having the lower of the two, screen, dimension and weight was not much difference. What led us to make the choice wasnt so much the price but the specification and availability in stock. As we normally go with the purchase when needed rather than keep in stock method which generally keeps the period from manufacture down to one month from manufacture. (matters as it reduces the improper storage causing quicker component deterioration.)

So with that put aside, the start up and access was a good improvement from our older notebooks (which was mainly due to hardware aging hence slowing down). Its start up was pretty decent. The video and audio a good improvement. Shows you what a couple of years of screen technology supported with good graphics card can do. But most of all from the entertainment side of things the actual work use for the notebook such as the crunching of numbers on excel and the brochure creation had a significant gain that brought pleasure to the work being done on this machine. Overall great choice. Since our purchase similar specification and models have seen some price increase due to many factors but none solidly documented other that new month, updated models price has some change to put it simply. But we are sure it is more complicated than that.

Here is an amateur visual captured.

Our second renewal of hardware we use was a little tricky. It was for our tech side of our business. Profiling the user is challenging. It needed to have the processing power of machine that could do data recovery, movie rendering with editing, graphics editing for pictures, good long work time for network tuning with installation and configuration capabilities but could be used in a gaming environment. Worst requirement was that it needed to remain portable. Now normally it would be better to go with a custom desktop where upgrades are easily available but due to the nature of requiring a machine that could be easily portable yet remain powerful left it down to being a gaming notebook.

So we got to exploring the brands we sell now we started exploring the Asus and the Illegear brands. Now the Asus had a few very nice choices which even  included aesthetics too. They came in the likes of the ROG (Republic Of Gaming) series laptops. the model in question that we finally had settled on was the GG751JT-T7050H. It wasnt the highest end model they had to offer but a good medium high solution. It had generation 4 I7, 17.3″ screen, 8GB DDR3 Ram, An SSD and a 1TB Sata Hard disk for the storage (now the SSD would give quite a speed in start up and hopefully access speed too.), A video card not to sneeze at a Nvdia GTX 970MX with 3GBDDR5 Video RAM, 8 cell battery for longer life and all the rest of peripherals that have become normal to have on a notebook especially on a medium to high range.

Its competitor would be the fully customisable Illegear notebooks, where even the start up splash screen could be customised along with the external shell of the notebook. Very gratifying for those whom wish to be unique. The specifications? You choose. So you had better set your budget if you want to make sure you finally make a decision. But alas we still had one more choice. Now take note that Asus, Gigabyte and MSI are a few if not the top motherboard manufacturers among other components of computer parts for both the desktop and the portable device segments like notebooks. So we really had to look at what MSI had to offer and this is what we had come up with.

Now MSI like any brand had a lot of options. And MSI like Illegear do cater for the higher end user with more options. Now don’t get us wrong that other user profile types like the student, office worker or creative segments (Studio for audio, video or images) will not find them attractive. But to truly appreciate portable power in mid high to high end notebooks will truly challenge the wallet of the thinking buyer. Why? Its like when you can buy standard car or going for the car of your dreams which will never have a good resale value. (Well not equal to making a profit at least.)

So we went through the specifications and offerings that they had to offer too.

http://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GE72-2QD-Apache-Pro.html#hero-overview This made us really start to do a spec for spec comparison. There were many models to choose from much like Asus and Illegear but this was where at this moment in time where newer hardware is coming out which spews efficiency, speed, reliability and of course power, a real hard decision on what should we choose came to head.

The model that got us thinking was a new release with 17.3″ screen,

  • Windows 10 Home/Windows 10 Pro
  • Latest 5th Gen. Intel® Core™ i7 5950HQ / 5700HQ processor | 4th Gen. Intel® Core™ i5 4210 Processor
  • True Color Technology pre-calibrates each panel, guaranteeing image output at preset mode close to 100% sRGB.
  • NahimicSound Technology with immersive 3D sound processing
  • Embedded NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 960M with ultra performance
  • Exclusive SHIFT technology for system’s performance and balance
  • SteelSeries Engine 3 to personalize your play style
  • Keyboard by SteelSeries with LED back light
  • Xsplit Gamecaster for broadcasting, recording and sharing
  • Miracast for sharing content wirelessly to big screen TV
  • Exclusive Super RAID 2 with 3 SSD RAID0
  • Sound by Dynaudio 4.1 sound system
  • Cooler Boost 3: higher efficiency dual cooling system
  • Killer™ E2200 Game Networking
  • Matrix Display with max 2 external displays
  • LCD Panel with Wide viewing angles

Now the MSI brought things like the Steel Series Keyboard that lights up in multi colours to the front of their offerings, the add on extra fan that you can turn on as you need, Killer game networking, some very nifty video display function options and more. Even the Windows 10 was a norm rather than  a free upgrade from Windows 8 which was some of the offerings that you had to keep an eye out on the other offerings from some of their competitors. Now many may argue you still get Windows 10 the older Windows may be a better option as Windows 10 has just been released and more. There are many ways to make 4. Not always do you need to go 2+2, you could also go 1+3 to make the 4 analogies. But for those whom have had to do restorations and more, you would understand about avoiding hassles later in the game.

So we made the decision to go for the GE72-2QD-Apache-Pro but alas as with fast moving devices so go the higher end devices, availability of stock was an issue. And this was apparent on all the three brands we had chosen as our options and alternatives. (price, spec and aesthetics in mind always along with durability and reliability. Using our previous rigs as a reference.)

So we had to make up our minds to go with the GE62-2QD. Still a very nice choice. Same features and specifications but smaller screen of 15.6″ from the 17.3″. As luck may have it even the keyboard having the mode to follow to music (not necessary but kind of nice feature to amuse your self) was also available.

Here are some of the pictures of the notebook.

This notebook came with attractive notebook bag and packaging. Now keep in mind there are three more slots for the expansion into SSD for the future. Speed could only just go up.

The final requirement was a Mac Book. Which we settled on a 13″ Mac Book Air. Not much more can be said that hasn’t already been said about a Mac. This was going to enhance our capabilities to support solutions that have more Mac. As we had already been enhancing our skills and knowledge in the IOS and other OS support on many forms of devices, this will bring us to more wholesome solution support offering.
