Introduction

When looking at securing a neighbour hood it would be most persons dream that none is necessary, however in the long run those whom have been at risk, had people at risk or naturally would want some measures in place.

Now all this is well and good. However reality will drive many behaviors and deliveries of that need or want. If improperly applied it could cause discomfort and even a hostile environment. Therefore is it best to apply logic and legal means.

One of those measures that should be adopted is measuring and defining zones of risks and vulnerabilities. The naming or grading conventions can differ from application to application, however it is best to be one measure adopted by one community that is common. Where in doubt then apply known standards.

Let’s take the above neighbourhood map as an example. It is located in a popular neighbourhood.  Profile of residence is middle to upper middle class based on the current measure of that classification. The risk profile is relatively high which can be determined by many factors such as income level, apathy, lack of knowledge of the neighbours (who they are, what they are, how many of them), a imagined level of wealth (based on cars, dressing and other factors), and much more.

Methods to address

With that in mind some of their thoughts around how to approach their potential risks are to have a few measures in place. And where these measures are placed will depend on their view on zoning their risks.

When zoning their risk profile, with an area that large it may be possibly impossible to agree on the methods and locations, however they do have options on how they address their zoning.

They could go with an overall tiered hierarchy zone, segregated zoning or isolated zoning.

But assume that they go with a tiered hierarchy zone these would be the zone profile suggestions.

Level Red Zone (1 or 5) (Priority Zone)

High Risk zone, normally the ingress and egress of any community as well as high population areas. Contrary to the thoughts that busy place will not have a high risk profile, facts have shown that these areas people tend to be a little distracted, hence the guard is lower. As such incidences do tend to occur there.

Level Orange Zone (2 or 4) (After urgent Zone)

Normally attentiveness to these zones could provide precursor information as to when a potential risk is about to happen. Especially when you adopt a Observe (Whats happening), Gather (evidence) and Act (based on facts) rather than illegal obstructions and actions.

Very useful to be designated as space or locations prior to ingress and egress to the neighbourhood. The space surrounding popular spots and outside risky space.

This will give lead up and lead out information to firm up the evidence towards an illegal actions or risk to the community. As such actions or requests for action from the relevant designated authorities or excercise of legal citizens rights is easier deployed with lower risk and higher success.

Level Yellow Zone(3 or 3) (The middle ground Zone)

Lower risk zones but can quickly escalate sections. Where opportunist may take a role of going with the flow of potential, either due to negligence or even plain apathy.

apathy (A good indicator to a neighbourhoods level of inclusion and getting along is by the level of cleanliness (garbage or leaves strewn all over is an indicator of low cooperation level hence high opportunity for theft/fire and other dangerous actions), Illegal extensions and blockages with barriers (more so if unmanned or automated without visual records and sensor triggers). These such areas will indicate that a reliance on outside help or hired help is as far as they will go. Hence you may safely create mischief and have low accountability.

Hence it is important that a neighbourhood follows the laws and indicates by its behavior and not by wanton disregard of the law with justification of self risk (especially with no data to back it up).

Level Green Zone (4 or 2) (The fringes of risk Zone)

Normally hardly anything happens if ever and most times it is totally devoid of real risks. The level of compliance by the residence is high in regards to law and neighborliness.

It is part of an extension between the important zones like red and yellow. Normally the continuity of a road,  a dead end road, and within the deep portion of the popular location but person could not do anything of importance without at least being observed or recorded that they were there hence a potential deviant.

This zone would be a nice to have coverage but cost and reach of resources could stretch it against the benefits of coverage.  Often forgotten segment till it ranks up when some events occur.

Level Blue Zone (5 or 1) Nice to cover but is covered at a distance without high visibility by other zones

This zone is the completion zone. It is where if put in place gives total coverage as well as multi angle/track view of the location to be secured. When this level of zones are achieved very little is missed in the neighbourhood.

Conclusion

Now this is another element of our safer neighbourhood in an open concept article. It is not said that risk will be eliminated. But if more measures are understood, developed and deployed with knowledge, open neighbourhood could become safer than locked down neighbourhoods. And it definately will increase the inclusiveness of the residents within the community.

To go forward with bettering your neighbourhood and its security it has to be more than just robbery but also any loss due to fire and the need for quick unobstructed access of ambulances, fire engines and police response vehicles.

So how will you go about creating that?

Going with the three intertwined sections of :

Allowing at all time for those whom are driven, those whom wish to be left alone, those whom want safety but not willing to pay, want safety and willing to get involved all to coexist in the community, be it a closed community that has strata status right to open communities with individual titles.

Do not break the law to achieve what you call safety. You are only creating opportunity for the law breakers to proliferate.

Guarantee, warranty and support

There are many items that we do in our day to day life. No matter how capable you may be there are some things that are beyond your control. Primarily the items require manufacturer assistance due to information or knowledge they do not share. Next would be natural need for assistance due to not having acquired the skills or knowledge to solve your need. Last and not least would be the need for assistance due to many reasons from lack of time to better use of your time.

What ever your need or reason it is important to understand the kind of assistance you need and is offered.

Normally support is for a solution or a product and rarely purely based on a service that you acquired. Reason being that a service rendered could also be rectified within the service parameters or conditions when the service is being rendered. Hence a lower need for support on service related products. Examples would be cleaning, security, cooking etc.  Reason being these services would be consumed, which means finished almost as soon as it is created for use if not soon after. Hence time and planning is necessary for this.

So we move on to the next area when support is required which is the product or solution (a complex or more intricate series of products and services that will provide a solution to a need or task.). For this area you would have two major sections. First would be a warranty or guarantee which is quite often used in many ways to mean many things.

      Now key to the above are that there will be limits to how the activities to make good is covered, when and where. There may also be no time that they will commit to completing.

      So now most persons or organisations will then go for the next item which is support. Now though support can be superior to a guarantee or a warranty they most often mistaken as the same delivery, however they are actually two different products of fixing problems. One is for making good on product or solution that has a lifespan before it fails, the other is to prolong the lifespan of the product through repair or education for an indefinite period. (Support generally is for a service or solution that fixes problems. Be it learning assistance to a fault that occurs with a product or solution.)

      So though some companies may provide a hybrid of the products thus creating confusion on the part of the consumer or user, they are actually many variations of product delivery.

      Now on the support portion after guarantees or warranties you could secure during that guarantee or warranty an additional series of commitments to provide assistance in a number of areas. They can be to fix a problem that occurs due to failure, adjust to maintain the product for the duration of use, improve or modify for your specific use, provide replacements and parts to maintain availability and also education. Things like design and redesign should be taken outside your normal routine activity. This will provide you the optimal delivery of support as the estimated cost to deliver will not balloon out of scale and then your provider will not cut corners to be able to continue to deliver the support.

      The fact is everything costs, even if you do it your self. It just varies if it is done with less down time or damage to reach a remedied working product.

      With that, it brings us to the other important item that organisations, people and companies secure a support solution. Time. This is very important to many and less important to few. For a product that many people rely on or is part of a chain of activities within a delivery, failure or down time can have serious losses just in terms of people sitting around. (work out the hourly cost per person and item left idle during time product or solution has failed.) Hence you can also secure a time component in support solution. Which means response, solving and completion can be measured to keep timelines in a delivery. Note without a contracted period in a contract defining relevant activities for the progress of the completion support vendors may employ affordability models of delivery of the support. This can include the number of cases the skill can handle within a certain period, spread of the jobs over the skills available period rather than immediate attention and many more such variations to provide optimum use of all elements to deliver support.

      The end of the day the vendors idea is to use his man power, tools and skill for every working hour of the day so as the spread is even as such the price will be a small incremental of that cost he has to incur with a reasonable profit for himself with little risk.

      So when your need is unplanned and his availability has to be as immediate as possible, they will apply history measurements where available in the same area, else a similar area and add some assumptions to that, plus a profit for the business. So the wilder and random the need with shorter timelines the high the cost for the vendor hence high the price for the customer. This however is more simplistic than the actual situation is. There is no short cut…. to web presence and ranking

Over the years there has been much hype on getting onto the web. Making the business available on the web and now the move towards mobile availability. When any new and not so new but finally more wanted form of presence arises there will be a lot of ideas on how to get there and sometimes how to get there faster.

The danger always comes from wanting to get there faster as this then exposes you to opportunist and other kinds of characters. While there may be many genuine innovators towards your goal nothing beats getting back to basics, that is just doing what you should do and doing it consistently repetitively. In other words build it right then maintain it.

So this brings me to the topic at hand, i have many friends and customers whom are entreprenuers whom have a long standing in the community and also have a lot of experience. However as times change so do the needs and skill sets. But one thing they all concure is that they have to adapt to the new ways to reach their customers.

Now more and more of them have started to focus on ranking on the web and being seen first or as close to it as they can. There have been many organisations big and small that have offered them services to help them achieve that. But sadly not many can maintain a good average or high rank. Else it will cost a whole lot more than is reasonable to the organisation (Formula cost of ranking cost less than oppurtunity, finally what is secured as business that is paid for.)

So they ask what do i advice? Well my solution is this beyond going to a big organisation that has a gurantee with penalty system in their contract go right back to basics. And to help you to achieve that there are a lot of tools that keep coming up for a reasonable price and even for free. You just got to keep up with the times.

So what is back to basics you ask. Well today the internet has got very complex and competitive. But they have also provided a lot of simplification. Now apart from ensuring that all your communications have your website listed do the following:

  1. Get your website written correctly (programmed, designed etc). With the risks and challenges that all web owners have come to such as loss of their domain (possible inability to transfer ownership to business owner), loss of their web designer/programmer, technology change and much more. The current trend is to use the blog tool which is easy to handle and manage. Hence possible to keep in house or to outsource yet still keep an eye on it in an understandable way for even the lay user. To know that you have kept your website search engine friendly there are many tools on the web that can provide you reports and advice of what you need to improve or fix (which could mean add). Interestingly enough this also gives you the opportunity to become interactive with your customers just a it was to do business in person. People like to talk. The forms changes but the need does not.
  2. Run that report tool. Keep the report tools run for the whole host of information that can keep you informed of what you are doing right. They come by way of the basic web analysis tools that tell you how much traffic, how often certain traffic landed on what pages, the unique vistors against revistors and such. That kind of information can guide you on what to update or write on as your users find that useful. Then the more informative reports as described above in item 1. That provides information on what parts of your website that the search engines do not find good on your website hence drop you in the ranking of whom they present first to the casual searcher. Things like your website page labels, meta tags, tags etc.
  3. Use the information that you have found that your website either is good at or lacking. When good make sure you keep it up with information that is similarly attractive. Lacking find ways to introduce what you lack so that you can increase your presence.
  4. Repeat. When you have found a good formula of information and actions. Repeat them. This is called maintenance.
  5. Last of all evolve. Keep a track of what is new and its effectiveness. Introduce it gradually so that you know what keeps and grows your audience. Not always what is new is good for you and the audience you want. Currently making your website mobile friendly is a good idea. It is not necessary to have a mobile app. That is just more people at times pushing you product you do not need. But it is important to make sure your website is viewable in a comfortable manner on all types of devices and on with most operating systems and browsers. But where not possible, set a target of addressing where most of your target audience is. Hence know what kind of devices, os and browsers they use or is most dominant in your market.

Pt2. How to handle data and create redundancy?

As mentioned yesterday. The soft/digital format of our data is growing and the level of backup in hardcopy is fast becoming scarce. As such redundancy in soft/digital format is becoming more and more important.

Today the most common method is people making another copy of the same on the same harddisk. For those fortunate to have corporate resources on their company server.

Other methods also are burning cd/dvd(a more permanent format but has its possible failings, see more in the future on this method), Thumbdrive (we will explore this further in later parts), external Hdd and now the NAS (network access storage). This is fast coming a more apparent good choice for most situations if employed properly.

Pt1. How to handle data and create redundancy?

Today almost all our data is in soft/digital format. Which means it is stored in electronic bits and bytes. This includes our memories in what used to be printed photos with negatives and videos.

The loss of this can be sudden as well as drastic. The cost of recovery if possible is also costly. But the loss of those memories can also be priceless. But the amount you may be able to pay may not be what is required.

So to follow an old adage “prevention is better than cure”. It would be good to be like a good boy scout and “be prepared”. As such back up in as many forms will be good.

There are many solutions. And all solutions its proper application. Stay tuned we will describe this more in the days to come.

Over the Internet printing and faxing solution

There are times that documents require fast printing printers or full media support (capable of printing all sizes(b4,a4,a3 etc) and materials and your local printer does not work or support it. It would be convenient to have an alternative printing method.

At KANSHARE we have thought this through and are able to provide you a pre paid remote over the internet printing account. This account will give you the access to print on the various medium sizes and request specific printing material (subject to availability and respective charges).

This printing and fax(works like a printer) just required the correct drivers and account activation to function.

Maintenance

As in all businesses, there is always a long forgotten and neglected part of the business. That is maintenance. So as the year ends we close for maintenance of all the tech systems, upgrades (1Mbps link to 10 Mbps unifi internet link, IP PABX migration) and a general clean up of all the facilities.

When the new year begins, all our customers get to have cleaner facilities in which to conduct and represent themselves on a daily basis.
